This week was a great week. Full of miracles, strange events, and lot of laughing. We are doing very well and I am sad that I have only two weeks left with Sister Hutchings. She will be heading home after this transfer to St. George. She goes to SUU and is going to be rooming there with a RC Jasmine. Cool huh? There’s some cool stories for this weeks email!
So we were tracting down in the apartments closer to the city and almost everyone that lives in the apartments are african american. We stand out pretty bad. We were talking with this one guy who wanted to bash a little. He was trying to shove the doctrine of the trinity down our throats and we were trying to explain the Godhead to him. He wasn’t giving us much space for words. He referenced a lot of scriptures and he talked about Matt 3- Christ’s baptism. I thought this one was funny. He said that when it talks about the voice from heaven saying “my beloved son in whom I am well pleased” it is really saying that the voice, God, is inside of Jesus Christ. So God and Jesus are one because it says the voice is “in”side of Christ, “in whom”. These people don’t have much of an education and take many things out of context. We just had to walk away from him. It was getting a bit tense.
Another story. When we were in a lesson with Vanessa, a RC’s grandmother, she said the closing prayer. She started, “Dear Heavenly Father, Lord God.. This is Vanessa speaking. I just want to thank you Lord for all of your many blessings…” and kept going. For some reason Sister Hutchings and I wanted to laugh so hard because she told God that it was her speaking. We should have explained that Heavenly Father knows each and everyone of us, we are all so special to Him.
Another story. We were tracting, again, in an apartment complex in the evening and in the freezing cold- it’s been around 40 degrees with a wind chill and the humidity makes it worse. We noticed this guy with a jacket that said Police on it and we realized he was a security guy for the complex. He seemed to be checking the area out and following us. (often we shy away from the cops or authority because they think we are soliciting, but we’re not. If we go to the legality of things, we have the right to be sharing messages about Christ.) I just decided to go right up to him and ask him if he had seen missionaries before. He said he had and he was very grateful for what we do. But he wondered why we were out in the cold. We explained what we do and that we knew it was true, no matter if the weather was good or bad. He laughed. And he watched over us while we kept tracting. He was a body guard for the night. Then after we made our rounds, he tried to give us money “not for a donation or nothing but just to get y’all some coffee, you know, since it’s cold round here”. He was very kind. We giggled to ourselves walking away and decided to save it for some hot chocolate. People here are really nice and I don’t know how to turn down things, they just shove it at us.
Another story. We were in a lesson with Terrie, our progressing investigator with a date in Jan. We were teaching the Plan of Salvation. In the middle of the lesson there came a huge banging knock at the door. THUMP THUMP THUMP. She freaked out, jumped up from the table, grabbed her daughter, and ran into her room. We were so shocked and didn’t know what to do. She was shushing us and just freaking out. We tried to calm her daughter down and just waited quietly while Terrie went to look out the peep hole. I had a million things running through my head of why she would be so scared. She shook her head and walked back, again telling us to be quiet. “I knew it, I knew it was them. Those darned Jehovah’s Witness’s, They are following me everywhere!” I just wanted to bust out laughing. I thought it was the cops or something but it was only JW’s. She made us stand there waiting quietly for a while until they left. Then we proceeded with the Plan of Salvation. Some people are just very strange down here.
So there is a restaurant down here named China Bear. It’s really good and is a Chinese buffet! I only ate fried stuff and chicken, I can’t brave the sea food… but it is really yummy. A less active took us there for lunch one day. If you’re ever down here. Come to China Bear. It’s really good!
OH. We had a million people come to church yesterday! Kerri and her son Abel, Tarsha who is a recent converts mother, Vanessa, another recent converts grandmother, Wesley, another recent converts friend, Sheila, Jasmine (RC)’s mother- all of whom are non members/ investigators. THEN we had seven less actives in church whom we have been working with. This is only who came on our end. The Elders had a bunch of people too!!! It was so great. We had the most powerful gospel principles lesson. I had two investigators on either side of me and both were bawling. One left to go take care of herself. They all participated in class and came out feeling very edified. BEST SUNDAY EVER.
We went to the temple with Jasmine for the first time to do baptisms. It was wonderful.
Next week a lot of great things are going to be happening. Well this morning we moved a lady from Cali in, a nonmember who is a sister of a Bishop over there. We are going to start teaching her. Then tomorrow we have Zone conference. Wednesday we are going on exchanges, it will be me in charge of our area, so we’ll see how that goes. Then thursday is wonderful weekly planning. I just love planning. Everyone calls me the most organized missionary. They think its weird that I love to plan and organize. Perhaps it is a little weird. THEN. SATURDAY WE ARE GOING TO THE TEMPLE WITH ALEX O FOR HER FIRST TIME FOR BAPTISMS FOR THE DEAD. I will be able to see all my Bridgeland people again:) 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 Oh and Sister Hutchings will give her “dying” testimony in zone conference. I can’t believe it’s only 2 weeks.
Welp. This one was a long one. Hasta luego!
Keep being awesome and write me 😉
